PUBLIC WORKS - SNOW REMOVAL

Snow Removal

Snow removal is one of the most important jobs of the Public Works Department. When a storm hits our area, the Public Works Department will sand or use mag water in the Collectors Routes, as the streets become hazardous for drivers.

These routes are made up of: Lazelle St. to the City Park (South Dakota DOT takes care of the "S" curves on Lazelle St. and out to the High School), Junction Ave., all Schools in the City, Dolan Creek Rd., Streets that have steep hills such as 4th St. by the Law Enforcement Center, Paisley Terrace, Moose Drive, South Third Ave.,7th St. & 9th St., Nellie, and Park St. by the RR Crossing.

We also sand or mag at the intersections of all traffic lights as well as Railroad Crossings in the City Limits.

As soon as possible, two Blades will be dispatched to the main Collectors Routes (see above listing of collectors route).

At the same time, one Blade and one plow will be dispatched to one of the wards in the residential sections of the City, to start the removal of snow.

The Street Supervisor will alternate these wards throughout the snow season.

When the two Blades are done on the Collectors Routes, they will join the others in the Residential Sections of the City.

Please keep in mind that the snow removal effort is often times hindered by vehicles parked on the street, if at all possible, when there is a storm prediction out for our area, you should move your vehicles, off the street to ward against shoveling your car out.

We also realize that many of you get out early and begin to shovel your driveways, and then the blades come by and block them back in.

When we begin the snow removal process, the first thing we will do is get the streets open to traffic, after that is finished, the blades will come back and clean out the areas from curb to curb and clean up the wind rows etc. So just have patience, we will be back to get rid of that ridge of snow left by the blades.
