| PUBLIC WORKS - STREET DEPARTMENT
The City of Sturgis has 34.9 miles of paved streets and 4.8 miles of unpaved streets according to a report done in 2004. Since that time, there have been several new additions to the City.
Our main objective is to keep the streets safe for our residents.
The street crew perform several different tasks such as asphalt patching; curb and gutter repair as well as maintenance of gravel streets to include blading the streets, and putting down more gravel where needed. The city crew also mows ditches that are in the city R-O-W as well as trimming around stop signs to make them more visible to the public eye. Another task the street crews perform is to barricade off certain streets for special events such as parades, street dances and Cavalry Days to name a few. They also barricade dangerous areas in cases of inclement weather – in spring and summer -flooding, or in winter, icy streets.
The street crew maintains Sly Hill from Junction Ave. to the top of the hill, the Meade County Highway Department takes care of the rest. During the summer months, mag water is used to keep the dust down not only for Sly Hill, but also for the gravel streets in city limits. The State Highway Department maintains the "S" curves on Lazelle St. and east past the High School.
The street crews maintain the streets in the Industrial Park as well as Whitewood Service Road to the Industrial Park.
We also maintain street signs to include street name signs and stop signs. During the fall months, we will paint the cross walks around the schools and paint the curbs that are designated no parking areas.
The traffic lights are regulated by the State of South Dakota DOT, and we maintain them.
During the annual Motorcycle Rally, the Public Works Department takes care of cleaning the streets and sidewalks in the primary areas of the city.
The crews start at 2:00 AM cleaning the litter from the sidewalks as well as from the street gutters, the street cleaner will then clean the streets. They will also collect garbage and spray disinfectant around the garbage totes.
The Public Works Department also manages the contractor who puts out the porta potties.
The City has a sign ordinance and we help enforce it by taking down any signs that are in the city R-O-W.
The Public Works and Engineering committee meets twice a month, on the same nights as the City Council Meetings. The First Monday of the month the meetings are held at 6:00 PM in the Public Works Department conference room located at 1057 Dudley Street.
On the Third Monday of the month, the Engineering and Public Works Committee meetings are held at 6:00 PM also in the Public Works Department conference room.
