The Sturgis Water Department began in 1978 when the citizens voted to purchase the water company from Jarvis Davenport. His father J.J. Davenport started the Sturgis Water Works Company in 1893.

The Sturgis Water Department is governed by a three person Municipal Utilities Board whose members are appointed for six year terms by the Mayor. The current board members are:
Dale Mormon - President
Chris Mechling – Vice President
Dan Mayer
John Hughes is the legal secretary.
