Sturgis Police Department School Resource Officer (SRO) Sergeant Darrel Hatzenbuhler provides safety and assistance to the school system. The SRO program is dedicated to provide a safe learning environment. By building the relationship between adminstrators, students, parents and Police Department, the SRO program has become an invaluable link to our schools and community. The SRO program provides assistance to Sturgis Elementary, Sturgis Middle School, Sturgis Academy, and Sturgis Brown High School. The SRO provides assistance during school lockdowns, conducts follow up and investigates crimes ranging from runaways to assaults and narcotics.
Sergeant Hatzenbuhler is also a D.A.R.E.
instructor and teaches students the importance of saying NO to drugs and covers other topics such as peer pressure with underage alcohol consumption and bullying. Sergeant Hatzenbuhler has 16 years of experience as an SRO and teaching D.A.R.E. and teaches 5th and 8th grades.
In 2010, Sergeant Hatzenbuhler recently was invited by the SD National Guard to travel to Suriname South America and speak to the Suriname Police Department. While in Suriname, Sergeant Hatzenbuhler visited with officials such as the Commissioner, Military, DEA and the press. Sergeant Hatzenbuhler's years of experience was provided to offer advice to Suriname's Police Department on beginning a D.A.R.E. program and funding ideas as they have seen the success D.A.R.E. has had in the United States. In 2011, several Police Officials from Suriname visited Sergeant Hatzenbuhler first hand in the classroom and observed a D.A.R.E. class. Assistant Chief of Police Adam Martin and Sgt. Hatzenbuhler met with several officials and held discussion about today's youth and found similarities on several issues between our two countries.
The 2011 5th Grade D.A.R.E. class of 2011 graduation was held on April 12th, 2011. This was Sergeant Hatzenbuhler's 16th year of teaching D.A.R.E. Thank you Sgt. Hatzenbuhler for your dedication to the future of our youth!
