In 2011, the City was awarded a $25,000 grant from the State to assist with implementing a recycling program.  A recycling fee of $1.00 was added to city water bills in 2010 to help cover the purchase of recycling containers.

As the Recycling Program grows, curb side collections will be made available.

Establishment of a recycling program has been identified in public surveys as a priority among Sturgis residents.  As the program grows, more collection bins will be added as well as collection sites for yard waste and other recyclables.

Two recycling bins are available for collecting  plastic, glass, newsprint and other recyclable materials.  Additional cardboard collection bins are also available at each location.  See below for a list of items acceptable for recycling.

One of the collection sites is located along the west side of the Public Works offices at 1057 Dudley Street.  The second site is located south of Exit 32 on the northwest corner of the intersection of Dickson Drive and Junction Avenue.

The following items are accepted at the Recycling Trailers:

• CANS such as aluminum, tin and steel
• GLASS such as bottles, jars and jugs - NO PANE GLASS
• PLASTICS such as bottles, bowls, tubs & jugs
• NEWSPRINT - NO MAGAZINES OR PHONE BOOKS
• CARDBOARD - PLEASE BREAK DOWN ALL BOXES 

The following items will NOT be accepted:

• NO PLASTIC OR STYROFOAM PACKING MATERIAL
• NO HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE - VIOLATORS WILL BE FINED
