Tattoo & Body Piercing License
All artists must apply for the City Tattoo and Body Piercing License. This license is good for the entire calendar year. Each artist must submit an online application form online through the Citizenserve Web Portal.

Each artist is individually licensed through the City of Sturgis to tattoo and/or body pierce. The cost for the license is $560.00 per year. The initial health & sanitation inspection fee is $100.00. This initial inspection includes certification of both tattoo and body piercing space(s), as applicable. (A second initial inspection fee is not required if you are also doing body piercing.)

Licensing and inspection fees are not prorated.

The application form can be submitted via our online Citizenserve Web Portal.

Application Form

Applicant must provide the following information when making application:

  • Definition of services to be provided
  • Location within the City of Sturgis that the applicant will use
  • Dimension of the space the applicant will use
  • Current mailing address of the applicant
  • Current phone number and email address for the applicant
  • Written affidavit that the applicant is over the age of 18 years
  • Current picture of the applicant
  • History of the applicant in the performance of tattoos, body piercing, and/or other permanent body art

Health & Sanitation Inspection
Once the Tattoo and Body Piercing License application is approved, the City staff will schedule your health & sanitation inspection within three (3) business days. If you are relocating your establishment and/or your individual tattoo/piercing station(s), a re-inspection fee is required. (The re-inspection fee is $100.)

Failure to obtain a City Tattoo and Body Piercing License or to pass a health & sanitation inspection may subject you to significant fines and penalties as well as the revocation of your City Tattoo and Body Piercing License.
