CHICKENS

The City of Sturgis recognizes the ability to cultivate one's own food as a sustainable activity that can also be a rewarding pastime. In doing so, you are allowed to keep and maintain chickens for the purpose of egg laying, within the Sturgis city limits.
These are the guidelines for the keeping of chickens:
- You must register your chickens with the City of Sturgis
- You may keep no more than 6 chickens
- No roosters may be kept
- The chickens must have their wings appropriately clipped to prevent them from flying
- Chickens must be kept in an enclosure or fenced area at all times. They must be secured in a coup during non-daylight hours.
- Chickens are not to be kept inside a residence or dwelling
- Chickens found running at large will be impounded with fees due before it is released to the owner.
