Main Street Sculpture Unveiling Ceremony Rescheduled

STURGIS (6.26.2018) – The Downtown Sturgis Foundation invites the public to attend the unveiling of a new permanent sculpture on Sturgis Main Street. The short ceremony will be Wednesday, June 27th, at 6:15 pm in front of Wells Fargo Bank. Weather forced cancellation of the event last week. The ceremony will immediately follow the weekly mountain bike race and precede Music on Main. All attending the unveiling will receive a Sturgis event cup.

The life-size bronze by artist Jeff Decker depicts Joe Petrali, champion hill climber and dirt bike racer, on his Harley-Davidson Streamliner during his historic one mile, 136.183 mph record-setting run at Daytona on March 13th, 1937.

Local business owner Lonnie Isam of Competition Distributing was the driving force behind the acquisition and placement of this sculpture. Donations and support from the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame, Indian Motorcycle Sturgis, Motorcycle Cannonball, Inc., the Sturgis Economic Development Corp, the Downtown Sturgis Foundation and the City of Sturgis also contributed to make this project a reality.

Members of the Downtown Sturgis Foundation will be on hand to explain how tax-deductible contributions can be used to acquire additional permanent artwork and benches as part of Sturgis’ downtown revitalization project.
