Sturgis City Council to consider downtown race

STURGIS - At its meeting Monday, Dec. 4, the Sturgis City Council will consider a proposal by American Flat Track Entertainment to host a race in the downtown corridor of Sturgis on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2024.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. with an executive session followed by the regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers of Sturgis City Hall, 1040 Harley-Davidson Way. Those interested in attending the meeting should use the Sherman Street entrance.

Richie Morris, AMA Pro Racing director of public relations, and Cameron Gray, the director of sales and partnerships attended a work session concerning the race at the council’s Nov. 20 meeting.

They discussed logistics, proposed route of the race, safety, emergency route for police, fire and ambulance, setting up and tearing down for the event, equipment that will be needed, the flow of traffic both vehicle and pedestrian, cost and financing, sponsors for the event, new attendees, and new manufacturers.

Originally, the race had been planned for Saturday, Aug. 10, but following discussion at the work session, the council asked if moving the race to Sunday would be possible.

The race organizers, including Morris, Ben Keane, Outerkind, and Bob Deislinger, managing director of AFT Events, returned to Sturgis last week to talk with council members, city staff, downtown business owners and other stakeholders about staging the race on Sunday.

A decision will need to be made so that planning of the event can begin.

Also at the meeting Monday, the council will consider the transfer of two liquor licenses.

The first is the transfer of a Retail On/Off Sale Malt Beverage License & SD Farm Wine, Retail (on-sale) Liquor License, Retail (on-off sale) Wine and Cider from Key City Enterprises dba Knuckle Saloon to NCSC Sturgis Ops, LLC DBA The Knuckle Saloon/The Knuckle Brewing Company.

The second is for a location transfer and renewal of a Retail On Sale Liquor License for Low Country Oysters of Sturgis, LLC. This is an inactive license. The location transfer will be from 103 David Drive to 925 Dudley Street.
