Sturgis looking for board/commission applicants

STURGIS - Looking for a way to give back and serve your community? 

The City of Sturgis is looking for individuals to serve as board members on various boards and commissions.

This is an opportunity to play an important role in the city’s governance.

An application for the board and commission openings is available online at Microsoft Word - City of Sturgis Board Application Form (sturgis-sd.gov) or at the Sturgis City Finance Office, 1040 Harley-Davidson Way.  

Currently there are openings on the following boards and commissions:

Municipal Utility Board: The Municipal Utility Board governs the Sturgis Water Department, and establishes water rates. The Sturgis Mayor appoints the three-person board on staggered six-year terms. The MUB has taken a progressive approach to provide water service to the city. Since its inception in 1979, they have completed numerous projects to keep up with the development of the city. The MUB Board meeting is held once each month (usually on the fourth Tuesday) at 7:30 a.m. at City Hall. This meeting is open to the public. 

Planning Commission: The Commission is created and by virtue of this Ordinance, shall carry on its functions in accordance with SDCL 11-6 and shall have all the powers, duties and responsibilities as set forth in said state statutes. The Sturgis Planning Commission consists of seven (7) members who are appointed as set forth by the South Dakota Law. One member shall be chosen by the Planning Commission to serve as Chairman. In addition, one member of the Sturgis City Council will be appointed to serve as a Council Liaison. The terms of members shall be three years with overlapping tenures. All members of the Commission shall reside within the City of Sturgis or a radius of three miles thereof. Each member shall be entitled to one vote. Commissioners are paid a $50 stipend per meeting.

Parks Board: This voluntary board is involved with meeting the present and future parks and recreational needs and services of the community.  The Board is also involved with the short and long-range planning of park and recreation areas, Bear Butte Cemetery, and the Sturgis Forestry Program. The dates and times for meetings are determined by the Board and usually take place once per quarter unless a special meeting is requested.
