City of Sturgis honors officers and citizen with awards

STURGIS – At the July 7 Sturgis City Council meeting, Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater recognized several members of the community for their extraordinary actions during a recent traffic emergency that unfolded at the intersection of Exit 32 and Junction Avenue.

VanDewater honored Officer Teal Schmidt, Sergeant Dylan Goetsch, and tow truck driver Tim Hathaway for their courage, professionalism, and decisive response to a tragic motorcycle accident that occurred on June 11. Officer Levi Sauder, also commended for his role, was unable to attend the ceremony due to a scheduling conflict.

The officers were each presented with the Chief’s Commendation Award, a distinction recognizing above-average alertness and exceptional public service.

According to Chief VanDewater, Sergeant Goetsch demonstrated exemplary leadership by immediately coordinating traffic control to secure the scene and allow first responders to safely assist the victim. Officer Schmidt showed remarkable bravery by crawling under the vehicle and staying with the severely injured motorcyclist until help could arrive. Officer Sauder managed traffic and secured the accident site with professionalism and efficiency, the chief said.

“Their actions reflected the highest standards of professionalism and teamwork,” said VanDewater. “Their coordination and commitment were critical to the safe and efficient handling of this emergency.”

Chief VanDewater then presented the Citizen Valor Award to Tim Hathaway, a tow truck driver with Plains Towing, whose rapid response was instrumental in the rescue effort.

Upon receiving the emergency call, Hathaway arrived on scene within four minutes and began working immediately to lift the vehicle off the trapped motorcyclist. His swift and courageous actions allowed for the patient to be freed and transported to the hospital.

“Although the motorcyclist tragically passed away from her injuries a few days later, Mr. Hathaway’s rapid response gave her the best possible chance for survival,” VanDewater said. “His selfless actions on that day made a critical difference.”

The Citizen Valor Award citation presented to Hathaway read in part:
“The highest form of service is that which uplifts others, especially within our own community... Through these actions, [Timothy Hathaway] faithfully carried out their duties in service to the citizens of Sturgis.”

Mayor Kevin Forrester and City Council members expressed their deep gratitude to all who were recognized. “We are so grateful to have people like this in our community — officers and citizens alike — who step up in times of crisis with courage and compassion,” the mayor said.
