Sturgis mayor resigns

STURGIS – Sturgis Mayor Kevin Forrester has resigned due to health reasons.

Forrester sent a letter to the city council notifying them that his resignation was effective as of today, Monday, March 23.

The city council is expected to schedule a special meeting for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to discuss Forrester’s resignation and move forward with a transition plan.

Last fall, Forrester was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Over the past several months, Forrester has had thoughtful and productive conversations with City Administrator Aaron Jordan, his administrative team and members of the Sturgis City Council to ensure continuity of operations should the mayor’s health prevent him from carrying out his duties.

“Good leadership means planning ahead, not out of fear, but out of responsibility,” Forrester said.

“Those conversations were not difficult because our organization is strong,” the mayor said. “We have capable leadership, clear processes, and a team that understands how important stability is for our residents and for one another. The city will continue to function effectively, thoughtfully, and professionally, regardless of my circumstances.”

State law and Sturgis city ordinance states that if there is a vacancy from any cause in the office of the Mayor, the vacancy may be filled by appointment by a majority vote of the council members, as soon as practicable after the vacancy occurs, to serve until the office is filled by election for the unexpired term at the next annual municipal election or by special election called for that purpose, as provided in SDCL § 9-13-14 and city code.

Jordan noted the city will now move forward under that guidance, and prepare for a special election for mayor, with preliminary discussion suggesting a possible election timeline in early June.

Forrester was appointed Ward 4 councilman in March of 2021 to fill the seat vacated by Steve Keszler who resigned. He became mayor in October of 2024, after then-mayor Angela Wilkinson resigned. And, he was unopposed for mayor in the April election in 2025.

Forrester said he is grateful for the professionalism, compassion, and support he has received from city staff and many others in the community.

“The strength of the city does not rest with one person, it rests with the team,” Forrester said. “I have been proud to serve alongside the amazing city of Sturgis staff and council.”
