STURGIS – Three candidates have qualified for the ballot for Sturgis mayor and two candidates have qualified for the ballot for the Ward 1 Sturgis City Council seat following Monday’s 5 p.m. filing deadline.
Additional candidates are possible only if a nominating petition was mailed by registered mail to the City Finance Office by 5 p.m. Monday, May 4, as allowed by South Dakota law.
The election is scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, with voting taking place in the lobby of the Community Center Theater and in the Meade Room at the Community Center.
The mayoral seat became vacant following the resignation of Kevin Forrester. Mayor Pro Tempore Tony Dargatz is currently serving in the role until a new mayor is elected and sworn in.
Candidates for mayor include Rod Bradley, Richelle Bruch and Tammy Bohn.
The Ward 1 City Council seat became vacant following the upcoming relocation of Councilmember Nick Jones, who plans to move to Texas in the near future.
Candidates for the Ward 1 City Council seat include Brenda Vasknetz and Terry Keszler.
All registered Sturgis voters may vote in the mayoral election. Only registered voters residing in Ward 1 may vote in the Ward 1 City Council election. The voting ward map can be found here: https://tinyurl.com/3z6c6ktx
Absentee voting will be available beginning May 18, at the City of Sturgis Finance Office during regular business hours, which are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
