STURGIS – During a special meeting on Thursday, June 4, the Sturgis City Council reviewed the results of the June 2, special election and identified discrepancies in vote totals from several Wards.
City officials said the discrepancies are minor and are not large enough to change the outcome of any race. However, council members agreed that a recount and recanvass is necessary to ensure the official results are accurate before the election is certified.
According to discussion during the meeting, discrepancies were identified in Wards 1, 3 and 4. Following the review, the council unanimously approved a motion directing a recount and then reconvene to recanvass the election results.
The council's motion calls for the recount to be completed and for the council to meet again on Monday, June 8, to review and certify the final vote totals.
The June 2 special election included races for Sturgis mayor and the Ward 1 City Council seat.
Until the recount and recanvass are completed, election results will remain unofficial.
State law says canvassing has to be completed in no more than 7 days after the election.
