STURGIS - The Sturgis City Council approved the city's property tax request for taxes payable in 2027 during its Monday, Oct. 5, meeting, setting the city's estimated levy at $4.23 per $1,000 of assessed property value.

The council approved the maximum property tax amount available to the city, totaling $3,358,370.

The amount includes a base property tax of $3,213,751, along with allowable increases for property growth, the annual Consumer Price Index (CPI) and previously unused, or "banked," CPI.

The city's maximum property tax request includes:

  • $3,213,751 – Base property tax amount
  • $16,069 – Property growth of 0.50%
  • $48,206 – Previously banked CPI of 1.50%
  • $80,344 – 2026 CPI of 2.50%
  • $3,358,370 – Total property tax request

The city's estimated levy of $4.23 means that for every $1,000 of taxable property value, approximately $4.23 will go to the City of Sturgis. This compares with approximately $4.09 per $1,000 for last year’s levy.

For example, a home with a taxable value of $300,000 would generate approximately $1,269 per year in property taxes for the City of Sturgis, or about $105.75 per month. This represents only the city's share of the property tax bill. Property owners also pay levies to other taxing entities, such as the county and Meade School District.

For illustration, on $300,000 of taxable value, the maximum levy would represent an estimated increase of approximately $54.61 per year, or $4.55 per month, compared with the base levy calculation.

The $3.358 million request represents an increase of approximately $144,619, or about 4.5%, over the city's base property tax amount.

South Dakota law limits how much property-tax revenue a taxing district can increase from one year to the next, while also allowing adjustments for factors such as the CPI and growth in taxable property.

The Meade County Auditor's certified value used in calculating the city's levy, including utilities, is $794,417,899.

Approval of the levy establishes the amount of property tax revenue the City of Sturgis is requesting for 2027 to help fund city services and operations.
