Volunteer firefighters are members of the nonprofit entity, Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department, which is run by an elected Board of Directors and serve under the direction of an elected Fire Chief.

Volunteer firefighters protect the community from disaster situations, including house and building fires. They respond to vehicle accidents and trauma calls.  Volunteers also participate in fire prevention activities, equipment maintenance, and training dealing with all phases of fire suppression, prevention, rescue and emergency operation.

Ongoing responsiblities include monthly meetings and annual training requirements. Volunteers have 2 years to complete the state firefighter certification training (100+ hours) through the course offered by the SVFD. Volunteers must also become certified wildland firefighters (online course).

Interested candidates must contact Chief Tom Trigg for more information as well as to begin the application and selection process.  Chief Trigg can often be reached at the Fire Station, Monday thorugh Friday from 8am to 12pm.  Messages can also be left at 347.5801.

Qualifications:
