The City of Sturgis has an ordinance ( Title 37 City Transit ) that requires taxis and other transit services to be licensed if they pick up or drop off a fare anywhere within the City limits.
This ordinance includes but is not limited to cars/trucks/limos/busses/pedi-cabs, and trollies.
Exemptions:
Businesses that include transit services as part of their hotel/motel or campground registration fees are exempt from this requirement.
The licensing process is handled by the Planning & Permitting Office. A current license must be affixed to your vehicle if you are operating within the City limits.
How To Get Your License
In order to get licensed, you will need to apply online for a Transit License (for either sub type TaxiCab or Pedicab) and upload the required information. (The first time you apply for a City license, you must create an account. You can use this account in future years.) The licensing process can take several days so please apply as soon as you determine that you will be doing business in Sturgis.
Please contact the Finance Office if you have questions regarding the Transit Ordinance. (605) 347-4422 option 1.
